Through God’s love we learn together, grow together and achieve together.

We have had another busy week in Year 2.  We have started our new English unit in persuasive writing and had lots of fun in our Sport's Day.

The children have been exploring persuasive language this week.  This has been alongside reading the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Book.  They have discovered that they could easily persuade me to eat their chocolate bars that they have invented!  They have used excellent descriptive vocabulary within their writing to tempt the reader.  The children were then able to create some sentences using the power of 3.  This is where they listed 3 adjectives in a sentence and separated them with a comma.  This alongside their marvellous posters are enough to tempt anyone to buy their chocolate.

Sports Day

After all the chocolate temptation, we thought we better get some exercise!  The children had a wonderful morning on Tuesday with all the children from Key Stage 1.  We still maintained in our bubbles, however the children were able to support their teams and cheer them on.  I was really impressed by the children's growth mindset.  They did not give up and their efforts were commendable.  There was a wonderful atmosphere, and we were very lucky with the weather.  The children took part in multiple races which included:

  • Skipping
  • Sprint
  • Hurdles
  • Ball switch

Photos of the morning can be found in the gallery.

In maths this week we have been adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.  The children used their number squares to support their learning.  We have looked at this briefly once before.  I was amazed how much more confident everyone was with the tasks I set.  It shows have effective it is to keep revisiting each unit.

We then learnt about money.  The children were able to identify the value of coins correctly and then use this knowledge to add different amounts beyond £1.  The children have learnt how to write these amounts down correctly and have developed an understanding of hundreds, tens and ones.  It will be very useful for the children to continue this learning at home with coins or when you go shopping.

Guided Reading

The children have been reading George's Marvellous Medicine in school.  It has made us wonder what will happen to Grandma if George gets his way! It has been a very fun book to read.  The children have been developing different reading skills each day such as their vocabulary; their inference skills; and their ability to predict what might happen next. They are using the clues from the text and pictures to support these skills.

This week the children have been using an Internet search engine to research different fruit salad recipes for children.  This is in preparation for the fruit salad that they will make next week. We are very much looking forward to doing this.

They have also been continuing to develop their class blog.  They have each taken a photograph of something they want to share with you at home.  This was either something in our classroom or work they are particularly proud of.  The Year 2 Class Blog will be available here on Friday afternoon when it is complete.

You have a lot to be proud of Year 2.  It has been another successful week.  You really are a credit to your families for the hard work and effort you put into your learning.

Have a lovely weekend!
