Growth Mindset
The children have been fully embracing their learning in Growth Mindset lessons this week. They met Fixed Freddie and Growing Grace. Fixed Freddie was told by his teacher that his writing was messy. He decided to give up and refuse to carry on. His friend Gracie helped to motivate Freddie to embrace the feedback he received to get better and improve.
The children impressed me with their knowledge of the difference between a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset. They made puppets of each character and carried out some role-play tasks showing how Grace persuades Freddie not to give up! They encouraged Freddie to learn from his mistakes and keep persevering. We agreed we will adopt the same attitude to learning in Year 2.
Maths
We have been revising our number bonds this week in Year 2. The children have been getting quicker at recalling these number facts to 10. They soon realised that if they know their number bonds to 10, it can help them solve their number bonds to 20 and even 100. Using this knowledge, the children made their own word problems for their friends to solve. They used superhero characters to write and solve number word problems.
English
This week the children have been learning the skills to write an exciting adventure story. They have explored how adjectives bring our stories to life and hook the reader. The children have learnt how to use commas in a list to describe the characters and the story setting. We have then thought of how to build suspense in a story by thinking about the exciting things you could find on an adventure. The children then write an alternative ending to the Henry the Explorer Story. Next week they will plan and write their own adventure story!
We finished our morning on Friday with our Drop Everything and Read session. This is a fun way for the children to engage with reading with their peers. We can sit anywhere in the class (even under the tables!) to read a book of our choice. At the end of the session we recommend our favourite books to the class. It really is great fun; and it was lovely seeing the children's love for reading.
Topic
The children have been comparing the similarities and differences to the United Kingdom and Australia this week. We explored homes in Australia and how some may differ from our home. The children were fascinated by the rainforest homes on stilts; the suburb houses with swimming pools; and the Dugout homes made underground in the outback.
Thank you for another fantastic week Year 2.
Have a lovely weekend
Mrs Ingram :)
