Reading

Please ensure that your child reads daily.  They should be reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.  It is important that they read to an adult/older sibling as often as possible.  Please ask your child questions about what they have read and encourage them to give opinions about the book.  Your child will be provided with a reading diary where you can write your comments on after hearing them read.  They will return this to school daily.   They can expect to read with an adult a minimum of twice a week.  Children will receive incentives to keep them motivated in school.

Your child will have the opportunity to borrow a library book weekly.  These are only changed once a week.

Phonics

Your child has been sent home with a Phonics Home Learning Pack.  This includes:

  • A parent's information sheet
  • An Alphabetic Code
  • Helpful Word Lists

Every Friday your child will receive Cumulative Text sentences to support their learning that they have completed that week.  The sounds will be familiar to them.  You can help by supporting them to carry out the tasks as a form of revision to consolidate their learning.

Spellings

Spellings will be sent home once a week and be tested the following week in the form of a quiz. They are based on spelling patterns that we have investigated in class and a selection of common exception words. The children should be encouraged to look at the way the pattern fits into the word to help them remember it.

Spellings are best worked on little and often: 5 or 10 minutes every day is more beneficial than one long session. It is also very helpful if you can encourage your child to apply the spellings in context by writing a few sentences using these words and, of course, using new or unfamiliar words in conversation.

Home Learning

Home Learning is set on a Monday.  Please ensure Home Learning Books are returned on Monday morning.

Weekly home learning includes spellings, phonics and a maths Abacus Task that has been allocated to them.

There is a TERMLY topic grid.  Your child can choose 1 activity per week of their choice.  This is related to our topic and our class learning.

Every child will receive house points for their effort and will have an opportunity to share their learning with the class.  Home learning is very much celebrated in Year 2.

Water Bottles

Your child must bring in a water bottle each day.  Please label the bottle.  Our water fountains are currently switched off, so water bottles from home are essential.  They will take these home each day.

Snacks

Here at St Luke's we encourage all students to make healthy choices, and promote healthy learning and education. As such, students are provided a free healthy school snack every day for play time. Students may bring in their own snacks, so long as it is a healthy substitute (e.g fruit, vegetables, fruit-based granola bars etc.). No nuts please.

P.E.

Children will participate in 2 P.E. lessons a week. P.E. kits will now be kept in school and children will get changed in class. Some P.E. lessons will take place outside so children will need the appropriate clothing, this can be a navy/black jumper and joggers if needed. Appropriate footwear must also be worn such as black trainers or plimsolls as some of our lessons will be on the Astro turf.

Birthdays

Every child's birthday is celebrated on a Friday in our assembly.  Please be reminded that children are not to bring in party bags or sweets.  Instead, we ask that a book is donated to our school/class library, so we can share a story together.
